No need for professional knowledge to fully measure the tool

The most important thing for companies is to continuously develop, increase, and always maintain this trend. Short delivery times, reliable product quality, and reasonable prices are the most basic requirements. All these basic requirements are achieved by high-tech, high-precision products and optimized operating procedures. Compared with before, today's detection and measurement technologies are required to be able to perform contactless, fully automated measurements with μ-level accuracy and operator independence from the operator. But how to form this virtuous circle? How to realize automatic measurement without requiring professional knowledge and short training time? The answer lies in the ZOLLER »genius« device equipped with the »pilot 3.0« operating system. The universal measuring device (Fig. 1) was developed by ZOLLER and made its debut at the 2001 EMO show. Since then, we have sold more than 300 ZOLLER »genius« devices worldwide. In 2008, the operating system of the »genius« was updated to the »pilot 3.0« software control system.

This measurement device can complete a variety of measurement tasks, but its measurement accuracy? For the ZOLLER »genius3« and »elephant« technologies, we show you the following:

1. Insert tool and clamp automatically (no buttons required)
2. Select the tool type from the image overview (Figure 2)
3. Press the start key
4. »genius 3« scans the tool, automatically searches for measuring points and measures – this is the entire operation!

All you need to do is just press the three buttons, no nominal data, no programming required to measure:

Diameter, length, taper, arc, rake angle, relief angle, table width, rake angle of radius segment, circle center, spiral inclination (take radius cutter as an example).

Data records can be saved and can be added at any time. Data records can be saved permanently. The time to measure and store 10 parameters is only 4 minutes.

This may seem impossible to achieve, especially for those professionals who are familiar with advanced multi-sensor measurement devices that require complex programming. This may be an ideal state. One of the many visitors to the GrindTec show, Mr. Martin B. from Neuberger, thinks so too. Mr. Martin B. is 60 years old. He has been working with projection digital display presetting and measuring equipment since he was 18 years old. Even though he could not believe that this was true at first, he did not know anything about the »genius 3« device. He personally measured a tool with the ZOLLER »genius 3« device. Measured parameters include diameter, taper, arc, rake angle, relief angle, and radial/axial ramp width.

For comparison, the tools we brought to the GrindTec show were not yet measured by many other competitors, but even visitors to the show were able to measure the tools with our equipment. Other measuring equipment manufacturers are always looking for a variety of excuses for their inability to measure these knives. But in fact, the experience and expertise in practice are, after all, the result of continuous accumulation.

The ZOLLER »genius 3« device with the »pilot 3.0« system has many advantages. Even if the tool manufacturers and users make many demands, the performance of ZOLLER »genius 3« is also sufficient.

1. »ACE« Universal spindle (Fig. 3) Equipped with a powerful automatic chuck: ZOLLER has also developed an interface for high-precision tool change systems, which can be used for HSK, quick-release taper shank, Capto and many other series of tool holders. Not only can the replacement accuracy be up to 1 μm, but it can also automatically clamp the tool. The spindle also includes an automatic hydraulic clamping device that clamps or releases the tool with just one button.

2. Multiple interfaces: eg «num« (Fig. 4) ANCA »mts«, »Schütte«, »Schneeberger« and many more, just press a key to generate measurement data from the grinding program from ZOLLER »genius 3« . The file is read by ZOLLER »genius 3«. The user selects the desired measuring parameters and then goes directly to the automatic measuring program. The measured data is sent via the network back to the »num« software. The measured data can also be used to automatically correct the grinding program as required.

3. On many tools, the profile of the cutting edge groove is important for chip removal because it is an important indicator of the tool's functionality. With the ZOLLER »genius 3« device, the flutes contour can be scanned in an adjoining manner (without probes) in seconds and displayed as a cross-section image (Figure 5). This profile is nominal/actually compared to the DXF nominal profile and output in DXF format. The slope of the spiral can be calculated automatically, so this profile can also be used for grinding discs and generating tool copies.

4. Especially for stepped knives, ZOLLER equipment can automatically generate drawings based on measured values. In order to optimise the graphic display, »genius 3« scans the tool as it rotates, thus providing a real-time graphic of the drill or open-end milling cutter (Figure 6).

5. The interactive auxiliary setting function of the »genius 3« (Fig. 7) allows you to define a measuring program for each tool with a single mouse click. This means that the user sets up the measuring program for special tools, while our original help, navigation and interpretation menus can select appropriate functions from »genius 3« to meet special requirements. The measurement program created in this way can not only be permanently saved in the system, but can also be modified at any time according to the new requirements of the tool.

At GrindTec in Augsburg, 2008, not all measuring devices allow you to immediately verify its measurement results and can impress you. Therefore, we recommend that interested visitors can bring their own tools, so that we can use our measuring equipment on the spot to conduct measurements on the spot. Of course, we will let customers measure their knives themselves. Complex formulae and detailed and accurate data are just one aspect. In practice, how to obtain measurement results in a safe and fast manner is the most important. Intelligent software, strict implementation of the user's instructions, and the use of the latest image processing technology, can only achieve these safe, fast and accurate measurements.
